In March 2018, Irrfan revealed that he had been diagnosed with a rare type of cancer called neuroendocrine tumor, which affects specialized cells in the body.

At the book launch event for “Irrfan Khan: A Life in Movies” in Mumbai on June 10, Sutapa Sikdar took the stage to share fond memories of her late husband. She expressed her desire to write a book about Irrfan’s journey, particularly focusing on the humorous aspects of his battle with the disease.

Sutapa mentioned that she initially wanted to write a book on Irrfan but not solely based on his personal life.

Instead, she was interested in portraying his journey in the acting industry. However, the idea presented in the book launch event resonated with her.She wanted to create a funny book because Irrfan was not a serious person by nature.Despite his illness, he maintained his decency and softness.

Sutapa found humor in the fact that Irrfan had to experience excessive flatulence due to his condition. She wanted to highlight how this embarrassing aspect became a part of their lives during his treatment.

Sutapa Sikdar herself is a film dialogue writer, having worked on movies like “Khamoshi,” “Shabd,” and “Kahaani.” She later ventured into production with films such as “Madaari” (2016) and “Qarib Qarib Singlle” (2017), both starring Irrfan.

In 2018, Irrfan’s diagnosis of a neuroendocrine tumor brought about significant changes in their lives. He traveled to London for treatment, accompanied by his family, and put his thriving film career on hold. After a year of treatment, Irrfan returned to India and completed work on his last on-screen performance, “Angrezi Medium.” However, on April 28, 2020, he was admitted to the ICU, and the following day, he passed away.
