SL declares a holiday and a day of mourning over Queen Elizabeth’s funeral

By Susitha Fernando Colombo 13th September : Sri Lanka, one of the former British colony has declared a solitary holiday and an official day of mourning on the 19th of September in place of the funeral of the late queen Elizabeth II.

Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration and Home Affairs announced the official holiday and asked to have the flag of the nation raised at half-mast up to the date.

The longest-serving monarch in the UK Queen Elizabeth II who died at the age of 96 on the 8th of September after reigning for a total of 70 years as the Sri Lankan chief of state up to 1972, when the country was declared an independent republic, totally free from the British sovereign.

The late queen was in Sri Lanka in 1954 and 1981, and later she was represented by the Prince of Wales and the present the King Charles III, when he visited the nation in the years 1998, 2004,, and 2013.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe visited the British High Commission in Colombo to sign the book of condolences.

“She was an example of durability and stability and she will be deeply missed.

My deepest condolences to the Royal Family and the people of the UK and the Commonwealth,” President Wickremesinghe stated in tweet.

Britain who defeated the nation of islanders from the Dutch and took over the entire nation in 1815, ruled until February 4, 1948.
