A new flood of refugees has poured into Mizoram as violence escalates in Myanmar

Aizawl 6 Sep : A new flood of refugees from Myanmar crossed into Mizoram for refuge following the Mynmar Armed Forces have launched a new assault on civilians and Arakan Army militants, officials told reporters on Tuesday.
District officials stated that in the past week, 619 refugees from the neighbouring Chin state of Myanmar sought refuge in four villages in Mizoram’s southern Lawngtlai district because of an armed conflict between the Tatmadaw (Myanmar army) and the Arakan Army.

Officials, quoting sources from across the border, stated that the Myanmar Army started attacking different villages of Chin state along the border between India and Myanmar from August 30.the residents of Varang and the villages that border them have been forced to leave their homes and taking refuge in Mizoram.

According to the official, Myanmar villager were transported by boats to bring all their possessions including rations, livestock and other items into Mizoram.

There are also unconfirmed reports of injuries of both Arakan Army and Myanmar Army personnel.

Prior to the new flood there were 5,320 Myanmar refugees in Lawngtlai.The miserable men, women and children had traveled across the Tiau river with small boats and traveled on tracks in the forest to reach Mizoram.

The newcomers are now staying with their friends and relatives and also in communal halls as well as other unused buildings.

Lawngtlai Vice-Commissioner Amol Srivastava on Monday to review the situation of the recent flood of refugees from Myanmar into the district.

The council decided to provide tarpaulin to facilitate the construction of temporary camps for relief and blankets, hygiene kits, and other supplies needed by refugees.

The relief committee of the district took the decision to solicit money to meet the needs of those Myanmar refugees of the state government to provide aid to the needy.

About 31,000 Myanmar citizens including 11,798 children and 10,047 women are sheltering in eleven districts of Mizoram, with which Myanmar shares a 500-kilometre-long border that is not fenced after the military junta ruled by General Min Aung Hlaing came to the power in February of last year.

This includes 14 lawmakers.

The vast majority of those Myanmarese who have sought refuge are part of the Chin community, also referred to as the Zo community, who have the same ancestry and ethnicity, as well as tradition as Mizos who make up the Mizoram’s 1.2 million tribal residents.
