CO A startup platform developed in IIM Ahmedabad.

The report was created following an interview of 4,070 platform-based gig employees between high-paying knowledge workers and daily wage agricultural workers.

From the 400 women interviewed 60% of them offered services related to house helpers, and earned modest amounts.

Nearly 78 percent had less than two jobs since 2015.46.5 percent of those who held jobs for longer than 24 months, results indicated.

“Over 32.4 percent of respondents still depend using cash. That’s in spite of the majority of respondents being educated as well as having internet access,” the report noted.

The report suggested that in order for financial inclusion to be achieved at a scale in India there is the need for technology that can reduce the costs of servicing customers to only a fraction of what they are currently, and the need for distribution models to be completely altered to make them more efficient for the final mile, and the unit-economics to be more inclusive.

“In many ways gig workers are the channels through which old and the new India interact. The ability of gig workers to control and utilize their financial, employment, health etc.information will boost their health and help unlock the potential of traditional as well as modern economy,” said Supriya Sharma Partner-Insights, CIIE.CO.

Based on a decline in internet and hardware costs technology-based platforms are increasingly an employment source in a time where traditional industries shrink in the size and scope.

“Of the 4,070 respondents more than 2,000 of them were of age or less. This is a testament to the growing trend of young India using the gig economy as well as its platforms as the most suitable sources of job opportunities and earning income,” said the report.

The ability to empower the gig worker with the ability to control and use the data of his own could improve their well-being including their job prospects and financial health It added.
