New York, Sep 5 : Ninth seed Andrey Rublev soared into men’s singles quarterfinals in the US Open here on Monday and stunned seventh seed Cameron Norrie of Great Britain in straight sets in the fourth round of the match in the Louis Armstrong Stadium here.In the two-hour, 26-minute match that was slowed by rain, Rublev defeated 6-4, 6-4, and 6-4 and he made crucial breaks in the three sets to win.He is now waiting for the winner of the match between Spain’s Rafael Nadal and home favourite Frances Tiafoe in the last-eight stage.The four-time champion Nadal and Taifoe will play on Monday night.
Rublev was consistently consistent from the deep, and was adamant with his chances to win back when he capitalized on an unusually reckless performance by seventh seeded Norrie to secure his victory in two hours, 26 minutes and advance to the fifth Grand Slam quarter-final.
The 24-year-old smashed 30 winners and made only 17 unforced mistakes on his way to defeating an opponent in the Top 10 opponent at the US Open for the fourth time.
The win puts Rublev to his third quarter-final in Flushing Meadows where he has a 17-6 record.
