San Francisco, Sep 1 : Tech giant Apple might make use of “hybrid” OLED technology, that combines flexible and rigid OLED panel materials in the context of its rumored plans move to OLED technology for the upcoming iPad models. The tech giant is reluctant to rely on the pliable OLED technology that it uses in its iPhone models because the screens tend to “crumple” and the result is more apparent as displays get larger, MacRumors reported citing The Elec.
“When it was revealed that Apple plans to use hybrid OLED to the first OLED iPad, the industry has believed that the reason was cost savings,” the report said.
However, it is believed that there’s a reason Apple prefers hybrid OLED in addition to the cost reduction.
A representative from the parts industry stated: “Apple hated the fact that a portion of the product’s screen might appear wrinkled to eye of the user if it was using an OLED that is flexible.
“iPhone OLED comes with a screen of 5-7 inches This means that these features are not readily apparent however, it is obvious in larger-screen (10-20 inches) IT devices.”
Although the hybrid OLED technology is still to be developed, it will require at least one year to be commercially viable , it is likely to be integrated in an OLED iPad in 2024, the report stated it was also reported that Samsung as well as LG are looking at ultra-thin glass substrates of only 0.2 millimeters thick to be utilized with the tech, a decrease from the current norm of about 0.5 millimeters.
