Kingston (Jamaica) August 17 : New Zealand batter Devon Conway has said he was “bit surprised” at the time he was asked to play the opening in the recent three-match T20I series against the West Indies, and added it was a surprise to Conway that he was in a position to give his team a solid start in all three games. “I was a bit shocked when I was asked to be the first batsman in the batting, and it was a pleasant surprise (to score at the top of the innings),” the 31-year-old Conway spoke on SENZ Mornings.
Conway scored scores of 43 21, 42 and 43 when he was paired with veteran opener Martin Guptill, and together they played a crucial contribution in the Black Caps winning the series 1-1.
Conway has not played internationally since New Zealand’s disappointing tour of England in June which the team lost three of their three Tests and the batter stated that his return was “been pleasant”.
“It’s (opening the bat) an opportunity for me that I’m comfortable with being able to play with Wellington higher up the order at the top of the. It’s been an amazing opportunity for me to play up there with Guppy (Guptill) which has been quite exciting and fun,” added Conway.
Conway is anticipating the three-match ODI series against the West Indies beginning later on Wednesday, with hopes of doing very well in advance of the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup in Australia and the ODI World Cup in India next year.
“I’m pretty satisfied with the way things have turned out.I would like to have of played more, particularly in those knocks in which I was able to get started.I had two of 20s, 40s (and) it would have been great to have gone into a big one, but at the conclusion of the day, we won the series and, as such, (we’re) very content in the camp overall as a team.”
After the ODI series against the West Indies, New Zealand will travel to Australia for three ODI matches in September, before beginning their World Cup campaign against Pakistan on the 8th of October.
