It is not the first time Bhattacharya has been served with an ED summons in this regard. He was already questioned by the central agency in the issue in August.

To recall, the Calcutta Supreme Court’s bench of one judge of Justice Avijit Gangopadhyay had ordered the demotion of Bhattacharya as WBBPE president and ordered an investigation of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the matter. The CBI later involved in the ED in the investigation process, as they did in the instance of WBSSC fraud.

In passing the orders for CBI inquiry, Gangopdhyay had also ordered for the immediate removal of the appointments of 269 applicants as primary teachers. He also noted that these candidates were able to get jobs despite not achieving in the examination for writing and some of those who were not even show up for the exam.

He also directed that the agents who are conducting the investigation are not transferable until the time that the investigation is concluded.

In addition the CBI had called Bhattacharya before in this matter, which Bhattacharya evaded.

The West Bengal government tried its best to stay clear of a central agency investigation into the principal teacher recruitment scam.It tried to approach an a division bench of the Calcutta High Court challenging the single-judge bench’s ruling on this issue.

However, on the 19th of July the division bench of justices Subrata Talukdar and Lapita Bandopadhyay did not grant an indefinite stay of the order for CBI investigation.
