Chandigarh 9 August : Simranjit Singh Mann is a fervent advocate for the creation of a distinct Sikh homeland, and SAD (Amritsar) MP from Sangrur, has sparked an argument by requesting people to raise “kesari” or Sikh religious flags on top of their homes during Independence Day in place of the national flag as part of the “Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign. In a text message, Mann appealed to the people to fly flags of saffron as well as Nishan Sahib from their homes between August 14 and 15.
The Nishan Sahib flag is an emblem of Sikh religion.
In the last week Mann has tweeted “Best tribute to the 75th anniversary of Independence is to free Ladakh from China instead of fluttering flags.
Also providing food and shelter for the homeless. If Nancy Pelosi could do it as well, so can the politicos and generals.Facta Non Verba.”
Mann’s comments on flags have been met with strong reactions from a variety of political parties.
Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has criticized some sections of radical leaders for trying to undermine the peaceful atmosphere in the state.
In response to a demand made from these leaders, including by Mann who made an oath under the Constitution, Warring said such actions are clearly intended to undermine the peace that has been earned in Punjab.
He declared that the tricolour is a symbol of national pride and that every Indian should be awed by it.
“Nobody can stop anyone from displaying a “kesari” flags on their homes, and every Sikh ought to be proud of the colour ‘kesari’ because it’s the emblem of the everlasting and beautiful spirit of Khalsa,” Warring said.
The tricolour is the symbol of nationality of India’s Independence and should be honored and respected, he added.
“Tens of thousands of people who, the majority of these Punjabis and Sikhs have sacrificed their lives to protect the dignity of the tricolour, and those who want to discredit it are ignoring our own martyrs as well as their sacrifice,” Warring said.
Responding to Mann’s remarks The Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann stated that the nation was liberated from the British thanks to the sacrifices made by “our our forefathers”.
“Those opposed to the tricolour have sworn vows under the Constitution,” he said.
