Birmingham 8 August : Geoff Allardice, the Chief Executive of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday felicitated Australia for winning the first Commonwealth Games women’s cricket gold medal in Birmingham defeating India by nine runs in the final that was tense at Edgbaston.In a statement issued by the official, Allardice also called Sunday’s gold medal game an excellent way to promote women’s cricket.”Congratulations to Australia for winning the very first Commonwealth Games gold medal for women’s cricket.It’s been an amazing 10 days of action at Edgbaston with crowds of fans cheering on the world’s top players.”

The nine-run win on Sunday continued the dominance of Australia in the women’s tennis scene after being the reigning champions in 20-over and 50-over cricket.Batting first, opener Beth Mooney top-scored with 61 while India were able to fight back in the final five overs.Australia scored 161-8 in their 20 overs.
Despite captain Harmanpreet Kaur making 65 and being part of a 96-run partnership with Jemimah Rodrigues Australia came back to beat India to 152 with three deliveries remaining in innings, and end any chance of an unforgettable running chase to become silver medalists.
Under the captaincy of Meg Lanning and interim coach Shelley Nitschke, Australia were unbeaten in the tournament that culminated in an extremely tough final.
