Washington 8th August : Daria Kasatkina continued her winning streak on Sunday, defeating American Shelby Rogers 6-7 (2-7) 6-1 6-1, in the final of the Silicon Valley Classic.

It was Kanepi the tournament’s sixth seed who was the first to strike in the opening set, which was a tight one with solid serving from both players, and pinning on the sole break point chance in the 10th set.

While Samsonova scored at least 70 percent of her points of service in the first and third of the three sets, Kanepi’s efficiency declined after the opening set, with a 77 per percent (20-of-26) percent success in the opening set and then dropping to 63 percent (15-of-24) in the second and third (12-of-19) to give Kanepi Russian with an opportunity to return to the competition.

Kanepi was leading 3-2 in the second set but Samsonova won the following five games with an unbreakable double break in the process, and forcing a decisive set.

In a tightly contested third frame with Samsonova in the lead 4-3, she created three break point opportunities , and only needed one to secure a buffer, and then serve out the match to win the title.

This is her first major singles win since her debut win at the German Open 14 months ago and she only lost two sets in the process, while beating five seed Elise Mertens, second seed Emma Raducanu, China’s Wang Xiyu and the Australian Ajla Tomljanovic.
