Phnom Penh, Aug 5 : Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Friday called Moscow’s alliance with Beijing as a backstop of international law in the backdrop of Russia’s ongoing war with Ukraine. “Our strategic partnership is one of the fundamental pillars of the movement to ensure the triumph of international law,” dpa news agency quoted Lavrowv as declaring to Interfax during the ministerial meeting of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) here.
The Foreign Minister portrayed himself as an advocate of the UN Charter which gives the sovereignty of all nations on an equal basis.
He also critiqued the US for continuously violating this principle.
“We are part of the group with the Chinese People’s Republic in the recently established Group of Friends for the Protection of the UN Charter,” Lavrov said, noting that he was expecting the group to expand.
Washington’s efforts to show its power in ever-changing places in the world would be a failure, he added.
The Russian leadership defends its conflict with Ukraine which is in violation of the international laws, on one side with the claim of “liberation” of the people there as well as a defense against the planned expansion of NATO that could threaten Russia.
China is neutral in the conflict however, it is blaming the West for the increase in tensions.
Moscow recently responded in the Taiwan crisis with diplomatic support for Beijing’s military maneuvers on the island.
