New Delhi, 28 Dec : .A representative of the Directorate of Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, western Herat province, Afghanistan, stated that the head of female mannequins will no longer be displayed in shops and would get cut because of their pose, Raha Press reported.According to the report, he stated that looking at such mannequins’ faces is against Sharia law.
This instruction follows a Kabul group’s guidance that advised taxi drivers to not offer to drive unveiled women with no close male relatives.
A few shopkeepers from Herat expressed concern about this instruction, claiming that the Taliban make their lives more difficult every day.
Shopkeepers claimed that each mannequin was $100-$200, and they now have to remove their heads.
Ali Ahmad, a Herati shopkeeper said that these mannequins were his only possession now and with the new order, I had to take their heads.According to the report, it is “a terrible loss for me.”
RFE/RL reported that the Taliban also restricted women’s freedom in Afghanistan by saying that anyone who wants to travel over 72 kilometers should be accompanied only by close male relatives.
A Taliban Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice issued an advisory to all vehicle drivers, directing them to stop playing music and to not pick up passengers with no Islamic hijab.
Mohammad Sadiq Akif, a Ministry spokesperson confirmed that the advisory was authentic on December 26.
Kabul taxi driver who didn’t want to be identified said that armed Taliban men had been asking taxi drivers to stop playing music or taking women in hijabs in taxis for some time.
Haroun Rahimi, an exile Afghan lawyer expert, criticized the Taliban’s directive.He stated that it meant taxi drivers would effectively be able to “police Afghan women’s bodies and mobility”, according to the report.
