Los Angeles : , December 26, 2018 – “Spider-Man: The Way Home” has a chance to become the world’s first movie about a pandemic (and first since “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”) that earns more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office. After the movie added $19.6million from 433 theatres in North America, on Friday, trade analysts believed that this would be the final installment of Holland’s trilogy. This puts the film within reach of a $92 million-to $100 million weekend.
Reporting the figures, “Variety” commented that these were huge box-office receipts in a period when many new movies (e.g.’The Matrix Resurrections’ and ‘Sing 2’) have opened nationwide to impressive ticket sales. The domestic box office is expected to reach its highest level for one weekend in 2019, despite concerns over the Omicron version of Covid-19.
If estimates are correct, Spidey’s latest adventure in Spidey will make $478 million within its first 10 days of release across domestic cinemas. This is more than twice the amount earned by “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”, the second highest-grossing Marvel movie.
Its staggering $224 million was the most expensive Marvel film.
It would be impressive to reach the milestone of a billion dollars despite increasing Covid-19 cases.
But what’s really amazing is that “No Way Home”, despite not playing in China as the largest film-going country, will surpass it.
