San Francisco, December 26, : .Sexual education videos made on TikTok, a short video-making application, aren’t being checked for misinformation.
They don’t provide teens and teenagers with a clear understanding of sensitive topics, researchers stated. Although some doctors, including gynecologists, have been active in TikTok to create science-based content, and answer questions from users, it is difficult for them to respond because of the sheer volume of information available.
The study authors at Johns Hopkins University in the US and University of Houston, the US wrote that there is no way to guarantee that a user will encounter corrective videos.
The team performed a content analysis on 100 TikTok-sex education videos to better understand the situation.
We found that the topic of female anatomy was most commonly addressed.According to Stephanie Morain, a professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Bloomberg School of Public Health, sexual pleasure was second in popularity.
Discussions of female orgasms and arousal were the most popular sub-themes.
Another common theme is contraception.
Leah Fowler, University of Houston said that “our findings suggest many areas where traditional approaches to sexual education may not be meeting adolescents’ informational needs.”
Researchers made recommendations to future researchers to examine the accuracy of TikTok’s sex education and to “determine how adolescents’ understandings of the risks, benefits, and age- and gender-based sexual norms affect their ability to understand intercourse, sexual practice, and other health behaviors.”
TikTok has recently reached a million monthly users around the world.
The website also beat out Google, the tech giant.
Cloudflare reports that the viral video app receives more hits than Google’s US-based search engine.
