This is more than the 1,821 who were shot in the same time period in 2020, which marked the worst year for crime in over a decade.According to Xinhua, data from New York Police Department (NYPD), 1,526 shootings occurred in New York’s five boroughs between December 19 and 1,490 last year.
According to the NYPD, shootings have continued in the area in the days that followed December 19.These included five victims shot in Brooklyn on Christmas Eve and the death of a NYPD school safety officer, 27 years old, on Thursday.Two others were also injured in the incident.
This year, the number of shooting incidents and victims is even higher.
Statisticians from the NYPD site show that the city had 1,868 victims of shooting in 2020.This is a dramatic increase of 102% over the 2019 number of 923.Meanwhile, shooting incidents increased by 97 percent to 777 to 1.531.
According to NYPD statistics, 2020 saw a majority of shooting victims being minorities, 73.9 percent were black, and 22.5 per cent Hispanic.
In New York City, 65.0 percent and 26.4% of the murder victims were Blacks, and Hispanics, respectively in 2020.
