Rahul Gandhi Will Kick-start UP Campaign From Amethi

New Delhi (12/12/2012) Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi, will launch the campaign for UP Assembly Polls from Amethi, his old Lok Sabha seat.Although the date is not yet set, it is believed that Rahul Gandhi (and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra) will be present in Amethi on December 17, 17 and 18.
After Aditi Singh, the Congress’ sole MLA, left the party to become a BJP member, the Congress is now weak on its own soil.There are no Lok Sabha members in either Lok Sabha seat as the Congress has lost both of the Rai Bareli MLAs who were elected to Congress.

To retain its seats, the party hopes to make a strong showing in the assembly elections and grow its numbers in the next election.

Smriti Irani (Union Minister), who defeated Rahul Gandhi in Amethi 2019 has been also working in Rae Bareli in order to broaden the party base.

Six of the ten Assembly seats, Amethi (and Rae Bareli) in the two Lok Sabha constituencies – Amethi or Rae Bareli – are currently held by the BJP.

Rae Bareli: Aditi Singh, Rakesh Sing and Congress MLC Dinesh Pratap Se have all switched to the BJP.

Aditi had rebelled against Congress in last year’s revolt and went to a one-day special session of the UP Assembly.

Since then, she has been critical about the Congress leadership and has been praising BJP.Since the last few months, her joining of the BJP had been expected.

The BJP has also won the control of Zila Panchayats in the two districts.

In Rae Bareli, Irani replaced Sonia Gandhi as chairperson of District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee, in July.

Sonia Gandhi’s prolonged absence from her constituency, mainly due to her health issues, has dampened the morale of Congress workers there.

The desertion of some senior leaders, including two sitting MLAs, has damaged the party in the region that was once a Congress bastion.

Priyanka Gandhi, who oversees Rae Bareli and Amethi, has also not been able to devote much time to the two constituencies due to her preoccupation with state level issues.

The BJP, on the other hand, has deployed a well-oiled machinery to widen its reach.The Congress does not have a single MLA in Rae Bareli and Amethi.
