Ten water bodies in Delhi will be declared wetlands

New Delhi, Nov 30, : .The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change will declare wetlands up to 10 water bodies in the capital.
According to a report from the Delhi Parks and Gardens Society, the identified water bodies are: Sanjay Lake (Hauz Khas Lake), Bhalswa Lake (Vasant Kunj), Smriti van (Kondli), Smriti Vand (Vasant Kuj), Najafgarh Jheel (Welcome Jheel), Daryapur Kalan and Sultanpur Dabas, Poth Kalan and Sarovar Lake.

The report states that these water bodies will be evaluated by land agencies, which will need to test or sample water every month or at least eight times per year according to Indicative Guidelines for Restoration of Water Bodies of Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

From March to May 2020, a one-time assessment of water quality was performed.

According to the report, 115 water bodies were found to meet the water quality criteria of ClassD (Propagation of Wildlife and Fisheries).

In the meantime, master trainers were established for the celebration of Bharatka Amrut Mahotsava.787 school teachers were trained on wetland values by these master trainers.

Eco clubs were also organized, in which over 2,000 schools and colleges participated.The authority will also receive 27 wetland mitras, which are pro-bono conservation grants.

On August 31, 2021, the first meeting of Wetland Mitras took place.

They will identify waterbodies in their neighbourhood and will report any threats or challenges to Wetland Authority.

These seven districts also identified model ponds in the North, North West and South, respectively.

According to the report, the benchmarks for model lakes have been prepared and sent out to all district magistrates.
