Colombo 23 November : .The Sri Lanka Navy said Tuesday that six people had died, and fourteen others were saved after the ferry in Kinniya capsized earlier in this day.Navy spokesperson Captain Indika de Silva said that the ferry crashed into a river while crossing a channel.The bridge over it had been destroyed.
According to police, the ferry was overcrowded when it capsized.
Initial reports indicated that the ferry carried 22 passengers, including two students.
Six bodies were recovered by Navy divers, four of them children.14 others were also rescued and taken to state hospitals nearby.
Still, search and rescue efforts are ongoing.
Captain Indika stated that it wasn’t known why the students boarded the ferry.Eyewitnesses claimed they were going to school.
