Aligarh : , Nov 23, 2003 – A 52-year old undertrial prisoner was arrested for theft and found hanged from a tree at Aligarh district jail.Although the jail officials have referred to it as a suicide case, the victim’s family alleges foul play and says he looked forward to hearing his case in December 4.
The Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) requires that a judicial inquiry be made into this matter.
Prison authorities claim that Omkar Singh was taken to prison on September 24, in connection with a case of cylinder theft.
Jailor Pramod Singh Singh stated, “Earlier, Omkar had been arrested on September 9, after he was charged under section 151 (preventions of the commission of cogniable offenses) of CrPC.But he got bail and was freed on September 18.He was again arrested on September 24, a week later.
Veeram, Singh’s brother, told reporters that his family learned about the death of their brother from police.
Veeram stated that Singh’s brother Veeram, a driver and driver, called his family to tell them his case would go before the police.
He was eagerly awaiting the outcome of his case.
How could he do that? The victim’s family claimed that he might have died in prison.
Vipin Kumar Mishra, Jail Superintendent, refuted family claims and stated that there had been no negligence by prison authorities.
Mishra stated that Omkar was not visited by any of his relatives during the two-months he spent in prison.
The body was turned over to the family after Monday’s post-mortem.
