Ujwal Jalali New Delhi : , Nov 21 : .The Tihar Jail, a high-security prison located in the capital of India, was known for keeping criminals away.
However, over forty prison officials have been arrested by different law enforcement agencies in six months’ time. They were allegedly extending prisoner benefits in some way.
There is still a catch. However, the quid pro quo in terms of the benefits granted by accused officials was only for rich prisoners.
Outmate or inmate, the poor are always last.
First, the Chandra brothers, Ajay Chandra, and Sanjay Chandra, former Unitech promoters, “used the services” the indicted officials.
Both Chandra brothers Ajay & Sanjay are being held in prison since August 2017 and are charged with siphoning money from home-buyers.
As many as 32 Tihar Jail officers were implicated in the conspiracy to support former Unitech promoters on October 12.
The Chandra brothers were alleged to have conducted business inside Tihar Jail, in coercion with prison staff.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED), too, highlighted some disturbing facts relating the way in which Central Jail Tihar’s premises were misused by the inmates.
A shocking revelation was also revealed by the financial investigation agency.According to the ED, they discovered a secret underground office in South Delhi that was operated by Ramesh Chandra (former Unitech founder) and visited by Sanjay and Ajay who were on parole or bail.
After taking into consideration the status report submitted by the ED the Supreme Court transferred the two brothers from Central Jail Tihar in Delhi to Arthur Road Jail Mumbai and Taloja Central Jail Mumbai.
Rakesh Asthana, Delhi Police Commissioner, was also ordered by the Apex Court to immediately investigate the matter.
The report was submitted by the Delhi Police Chief on September 28.
Asthana prepared a confidential report that identified the prison officials.
The Centre for Enhanced Prison Management at Tihar was also recommended 23 actions points.
These recommendations also included the installation of body scanners and jammers.
On November 10, the highest court expressed dissatisfaction at the Ministry of Home Affairs’ (MHA), delay in implementing the recommendations of Commissioner Asthana regarding prison reforms. The court noted that Tihar prison has turned into a “den of criminals” and it’s a “sorry state”.
K.M., the Additional Solicitor General of India was informed by the court.Nataraj stated that the recommendations of the Delhi Police Commissioner are very important.
The court asked MHA to follow these steps.Tihar prison was once again in turmoil even before Chandra’s case had settled.
Sukesh Chandrashekhar, a multi-millionaire silk stocking “conman”, is also accused of deceiving politicians, businessmen and celebrities by using the Tihar prison’s services.
After he deceived politician T.T.V., Sukesh was imprisoned at Tihar Jail.Dhinakaran, worth Rs 50 crore.
The Crime Branch of Delhi Police arrested Sukesh in connection to Dhinakaran’s complaint. He was then sent to jail.
Surprisingly, the “conman,” continued running the racket inside Tihar Jail.
The accused is charged with extorting Rs200 crore from Shivinder Singh and Malvinder Singh, former promoters of Fortis Healthcare and Ranbaxy Lab from prison.
How did he manage to do it? There was certainly an inner help but it was too expensive.
As a bribe, the conman offered Rs 75 lakh per week for a cell phone.
Five Tihar Jail officers were later arrested by the Economic Offences Wing of Delhi Police. However, Sukesh’s con methods against the Singhs was extremely impressive.
While calling Shivinder’s spouse, Sukesh claimed to be Union Law Secretary Anoop Kumar and offered his help for getting her husband bail.
He used a fake app in August 2020 to pretend that he was calling Ravi Shankar Prasad, the former Law Minister.
Sukesh used “Jai Hind” before disconnecting all calls.
All of these incidents took place inside a prison. However, it is possible to address the problem of using a cell phone in prison by using apt technology.
IANS was informed by Sandeep Goyal, Director General of Prisons that they have installed three towers in the jail to block mobile signals from the prison.
Goyal stated that they recently added over 7,000 CCTV cameras to all of their prisons in order to monitor the inmates.
Every jail should have at least 500 to 600 cameras.”The feed from CCTVs lasts at most one month,” said the Tihar DG.He also stated that this is a positive step which could prove to be beneficial for the future.
Goyal stated that two body scanners were needed during the Supreme Court hearing.
The DG stated that Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), granted permission in this matter and the scanners would soon be installed at Tihar Jail.
