New Delhi, November 20, : , The Marriott Hotel in Prague declined to host this month’s conference to draw attention to the alleged violations of human rights in China.CNN reported.According to CNN and an email reported by Axios first, the Prague Marriott stated that it had chosen to not host the World Uyghur Congress because of “reasons for political neutrality”.
Marriott International, Inc.stated in a statement that the Prague hotel’s responses to the group were “not consistent” with their policies.
According to reports, Marriott stated that the Prague hotel management team had reached out to them to offer their apologies.
Marriott stated that they are working closely with hotel staff to offer additional education and training on long-standing inclusion practices.
Marriott confirmed to us that Prague Marriott had sent an email last month explaining that November’s conference wouldn’t be held there after consulting with corporate management.
“Unfortunately, we cannot offer these premises.The whole issue was discussed with corporate management.
We cannot provide events with this kind of theme for political reasons,” stated the email.
Marriott International stated to CNN that this decision was made at the hotel-level.
The report also said the “corporate management” reference refers to Prague’s management.
Zumretay Arkin, an advocacy and program manager at the World Uyghur Congress confirmed that Marriott reached out to its representative in Prague.Arkin stated, “But I still wait for an official apology.”
Arkin stated that Marriott’s reaction was shocking in an interview with Axios.
Arkin stated that international events are organized all the time, and this was the first excuse given to him.It is alarming due to the larger concept that China really is disrupting Western democracies.
