SC accepts plea for hate speech prevention steps

New Delhi, November 12, : Fridays Supreme Court decision allowed it to review a petition seeking to direct the Central government to study various international laws in order to take "effective" and strictive steps to combat the threat of hatred speech and rumour-mongering.New Delhi : Friday, Nov 12, 2012: The Supreme Court accepted a request from the Central government for direction regarding a complaint against hate speech and rumour spreading in India.

A bench of justices A.M.Khanwilkar and C.T.A.M.Khanwilkar, and C.T.A.M.Khanwilkar (C.T.) and Ravikumar, justices.Ravikumar scheduled the matter for hearing on November 22, along with a separate plea, which also came up for hearing during the day, in connection with the hate speech issue.

The plea said: "The petitioner is filing this writ petition as a PIL.seeking writ/order/direction to the Centre to examine the international laws relating to hate speech and rumour mongering and take apposite effective stringent steps to control hate speech and rumour-mongering in order to secure rule of law, freedom of speech and expression and Right to Life, Liberty and Dignity of citizens."According to the plea, "The petitioner has filed this writ as a PIL" and sought writ/order/direction to Centre to review the international laws regarding hate Speech and Rumour Mongering and to take appropriate effective strict steps to combat hate Speech and rumour-mongering in order to ensure rule of law, freedom speech and expression, and the Right to Life, Liberty, and Dignity for all citizens.
