Kohima 13 September : Opposition Congress in Nagaland is keen to create an “secular alliance” with like-minded parties before the Assembly elections in the spring of next year, its state president K.Therie said on Tuesday.The Congress was the ruling party in the state’s northeastern region for more than 15 years in its most tense period of conflict and other challenging circumstances, was a candidate in 18 of the 60 seats in the 2018 Assembly elections with other parties, but was left with an empty.
Therie said that , in the light of the political situation in India the creation of an “secular alliance” with the like-minded parties to take on the BJP is the necessity of the moment.
He however did not reveal the names of the political parties with which his party would create the “secular alliance”.
The state Congress chief encouraged the “erstwhile” Congress leaders, employees and well-wishers, to join the party in fighting “anti-Christ and anti-Christian, anti Muslim and anti-women” forces.
He stated that in order to eliminate the roadblocks and resolve the Naga political dispute A secular and democratically elected government is needed in Nagaland.
“The seat sharing agreement between the NDPP and BJP six months prior to the date of the Assembly election is an attempt to divert public’s attention away from the politic resolution of Naga.
Naga issue, which was put in the cold storage” he claimed.
He stated that the Congress will field 40 candidates in the Assembly elections scheduled to take place in February next year.
He said that the majority of state political parties, excluding the BJP are secular, he said the ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) may be a part of its front if they wish to keep their secular image and desire to ensure the welfare of the nation.
With 42 lawmakers and 42 legislators, the NDPP controls the opposition-free Nagaland government, where the BJP with 12 lawmakers has been an associate partner since the year 2018.
The solution of the Naga political dispute is the most important issue in Nagaland and the government of the state as well as the various parties have been calling for solve the long-running issue prior to the Assembly elections.
