London 10th August : British Conservative peer and former leader of the party Lord Hague of Richmond has warned of the “danger of getting desensitised” to Russia’s conflict in Ukraine. In the Tory leadership contest the Foreign Secretary who was a former Tory leader referred to the actions of Russia as “main issue and a threat to everyone’s safety and prosperity”.
He said to Times Radio: “Imagine if there wasn’t been the Ukraine war and if terrorists took over one of the largest nuclear power stations in Europe and were putting up explosives around it , and then beginning to attack people with it, that would be the most significant story in the world. It would be the subject that everyone in Europe would be talking about.
“We’re getting used to “oh there’s war going on in the background” that when it occurs it’s the Russians are firing from all around the plant, to place mines and explosives there.posing an atomic catastrophe, in the view of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it’s not a big deal anymore, is it?”
“I I mean, it’s being reported on but it’s not dominating things, so this kind of becoming deaf to conflict is a risk since it’s the most important thing that is that is happening and poses a threat to the security of everyone’s economic prosperity in the end.”
Lord Hague warned Europe against appeasement, advising that Russian President Vladimir Putin “will come back for more,” dpa news agency reported.
He also said: “We won’t solve anything in our own domestic environment in the event that we cease to help a country that is fighting for its own democratic system and fighting for its territory. There’s a risk that some people may believe (in) Britain or perhaps more so in Italy, Germany, France that this issue is easily solved.”
“Really the main point is it’s not a commodity that can be purchased because if you purchase the item off, Putin will come back to buy more, and we’ve learned from history that this is an incredibly mistake, if you are attempting to please an dictator.”
“So we must — I’m bringing up this issue because I believe there’s a chance of people ignoring the primary thing happening and the risks it poses in the next few months.”
According to UK Defence Intelligence, Russia’s actions have “likely affected the security and security” of operations at Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.
The Ministry of Defence earlier raised concerns about the Zaporizhzhia facility that was taken over by Russian troops in March, shortly after the invasion on February 24 of Ukraine.UN Nuclear Chief Rafael Grossi this week stated that the power plant in the south-eastern Ukrainian city of Enerhodar is “completely out of control”.
In a telephone call late on Tuesday afternoon Boris Johnson and French President Emmanuel Macron agreed the importance of not allowing “western war fatigue” to impede efforts to help Ukraine.
A Downing Street spokesperson said: “On Ukraine, the Prime Minister Boris Johnson and President Macron both have stressed the significance of the international community maintaining its commitment to help the Ukrainian people of Ukraine in their fight.
“They acknowledged they believed that UK as well as French efforts in training and equipping Ukrainian troops are making a major difference in the conflict and that western war fatigue must not be allowed to develop and set in.President Macron acknowledged the leadership of the Prime Minister in Ukraine.”
