The spinner recorded numbers of 6/118 and 6/59, as the hosts came back to beat Australia in Galle in the test series of two matches. They defeated the Pat Cummins-led team by 39 and an innings.

Jayasuriya defeated England batter and player of the Month Jonny Bairstow, as well as French superstar Gustav McKeon for the monthly award, following a fantastic beginning in international cricket in the longest format.

The 30-year-old was ecstatic to be awarded the award every month.”I am extremely happy with this news and I would like to thank my fans for deciding to vote me the ICC Men’s Player of the Month,” Jayasuriya said.

“Certainly it’s been an amazing month for me as I made my debut in the Test, and also had the chance to play for my team in bringing the team up to the series of Tests played against Australia and Pakistan.

“I want to express my gratitude to my teammates, fans coaches, family members and friends for being a part of my journey and am extremely happy with the things I am experiencing right now in my life.”

Jayasuriya’s form remained consistent throughout the series of Tests against Pakistan. In spite of Sri Lanka losing the series opener in Galle against Babar Azam’s team, Jayasuriya was the most successful bowler for the hosts with numbers of 5/82 and 4/135.

In the second Test , which was played against Pakistan, he clinched his fourth five-wicket haul in only three Tests.

After scoring 3/80 in the first innings he scored numbers of 5/117 in the second innings when Sri Lanka romped home to an unbeatable 246-run win to draw equalize the series.

With his performance, Jayasuriya registered four five-wicket hauls in only three Test games and four in six innings.

The award marks an outstanding beginning in the international scene for the left-arm spinner of 30 years who is hoping to repeat his feats in the upcoming Test matches.

The former India fast and ICC voting panel member Irfan Pathan said that Jayasuriya was an obvious distinct figure from his point of view.

“Being an unexperienced player in Test cricket and beginning with two 5-wicket hauls in the first match is awe-inspiring, and even more impressive when you play an opponent similar to Australia,” Pathan said.

“A record of 29 wickets in just three Tests is a feat that isn’t worthy to be missed and, for that reason, he is my ICC Men’s Player of the Month.”
