Chennai, December 30, : Tamil Nadu Minister For Cooperatives I.Periyasami stated that 10.
18 lakh persons have benefited from the scheme to waive the interest on jewel loans as per the promise made by the DMKThe Minister spoke to journalists at Dindigul Thursday and stated that 48 lakh people had taken out loans for less than five sovereigns worth of gold via cooperative societies.According to the Minister, only 22 lakh have pledged gold in accordance with the norms.
He also stated that there had been major misappropriation as many people pledged more than five sovereigns.Periyasami said, "A person could even take Rs 5.85 Crore by promising more than 100 sovereigns and dividing them into five sovereigns at different banks." The Minister stated that the government would take stern action against cooperative society employees in these cases.
