Andhra HC cancels government orders to lower cinema ticket prices

Hyderabad, December 14, : , The Andhra Pradesh High Court suspended Tuesday’s state government order reducing prices for cinema tickets.
On a petition by owners of cinema theaters challenging Government Order 35 (GO 35) issued April 2012, the court granted the order.

The orders were intended to reduce the price.

The petitioners were able to sell tickets at the old prices.

Petitioners argued that the GO was not in compliance with earlier court orders.

The government was wrong to intervene in the pricing of cinema tickets.

They claimed that this did not make sense and they were entitled to set the prices for new movies.

Several sections of the Telugu film industry expressed dissatisfaction with the GO, and urged government officials to cancel it.The YSR Congress Party government (YSRCP), however, defended their move, arguing that cinemas had been resorted to an exorbitant price hike before big-budget films were released or movies starring big actors.

A bill was passed by the state Assembly last month to allow for online ticketing.

The government went ahead with the passing of legislation despite reservations by a section of industry.Minister for Cinematography Perni Venkataramaiah said that AP Cinemas (Regulation) (Amendment) Bill 2021 will check exploitation of moviegoers.

Megastar Chiranjeevi also requested the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S.Jagan Mohan Reddy to rethink the government’s decision to have a low cap on movie ticket prices.

He had stated that for the survival of theatres and for the many families who depend upon cinema alone for their survival, these reduced online ticketing rates should have the same flexibility as the uniform GST prices.
