New Delhi, December 12 : .After protests for basic rights that lasted weeks, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan said Sunday that the government would take “strong actions” to stop illegal fishing from trawlers near Gwadar, Express Tribune reported.
The premier tweeted that he was aware of “very legitimate requests” from Gwadar’s hardworking fishermen, a key component of China Pakistan Economic Corridor project (CPEC).

Premier says he will speak with Abdul Quddus Bizenjo, Balochistan Chief Minister. This would allow him to address the concerns of the Balochistan fisherman community.

Gwadar’s citizens have held a sit in at the port for over 20 days to demand their fundamental rights.Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman is the provincial general secretary for Jamaat-e-Islami Balochistan.

The report stated that several rounds of negotiations between the Balochistan government representatives and protesters failed.

They said they would not stop their demonstration if it was only verbal promises.

Their demands include the provision of potable water to the citizens, civic amenities, employment opportunities for locals, and removal of unnecessary security checkpoints spread across the city.

The protesters have also demanded an end to illegal fishing in Gwadar’s waters by foreign trawlers, saying illegal fishing trawlers were destroying Baloch fisherfolk’s livelihood and the marine environment, and for restrictions on trade with Iran — a major source of income for the locals — to be lifted.

The only demand that has been complied with so far is the closure of wine shops in Gwadar, the report added.
