After an army operation goes wrong (3rd Ld), 14 people were killed in Nagaland violence

Kohima, Dec 5, : A series of violent clashes broke out in Nagalands Mon District.

Officials said that 13 civilians and an Assam Rifles trooper were among the victims.

The violence arose after an army operation against Naga insurgents was canceled late SaturdayAccording to local media reports, however 14 civilians were killed in the shooting incident in Mon, Myanmar.The National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah, in a statement, said that 15 civilians were killed in the Assam Rifles firing.

Leaders of several Naga organisations, including Konyak Hoho (OVSU) and Oting Village Students Union (OVSU), claimed eight coal miners were returning to Tiru in a pick up van when they were targeted.Kepwang Konyak, President of OVSU, stated that security forces opened fire on them because they had "mistaken identities".

Six people were killed on the spot while two others were injured.Two other victims were taken to the hospital with the Assam Rifles.

He claimed that upon hearing the incident, an angry mob ran to the area and Assam Rifles personnel fired in self defense, killing seven more civilians, and injuring twelve villagers.The injured civilians were taken by ambulance to the nearest hospital.

After the incident between Oting and Tiru villages, an Assam Rifles jawan was attacked by mob members and killed.On Sunday, a large number of angry villagers attacked the Assam Rifles camp at Mon.The jawans opened fire in order to disperse them.Due to the location being far from the station, a large contingent of police arrived on the spot very late.

Villagers and sources said that the security personnel are believed to have mistaken the victims as members of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang-Yung Aung and fired on them.Three vehicles were set on fire by angry locals.

According to defence sources, the incident caused severe injuries to security forces personnel, with one soldier even dying.The Army briefed the public by stating that, based on credible intelligence about the likely movement of insurgents in the area of Tiru, Mon district, a specific operation was planned "The incident and its aftermath are deeply regretted.

"The cause of the tragic loss of life is being investigated at all levels and appropriate action will taken in accordance with the law," the statement stated.The incident is still under investigation by the Nagaland Police.

Authorities have placed curbs in the areas affected by the violence.In a notification, Nagaland Home Commissioner Abhljit Singhha stated that social media platforms in Mon district could not be used for spreading rumours, fake information, or for circulating inflamatory texts, photos, videos, which could inflame passions, and thus worsen the law and order situation.

To prevent further deterioration in law and order, Mon Deputy Commissioner ThavaseelanK.has promulgated the 144 Cr PC in the district, prohibiting gatherings of more than five persons and the movement of vehicles, except those of security forces and administration.

Neiphiu Rio, the Chief Minister of Nagaland, rushed to Kohima on Sunday from New Delhi.He has now ordered a high-level investigation by a Special Investigation Team "The tragic incident that led to the killing of civilians at Oting Mon is deeply regrettable.
