ITF World Tour C’ships: Pranjala defeats Sowjanya in the final to win women’s singles title

Bengaluru, Dec 5, : Pranjala Yanlapalli won the KSLTA World Tour Championships women’s singles title.

She defeated Sowjanya Bhavisetti here on SundayYadlapalli, who had cramps after playing two back-to-back three setters in her semifinal and quarterfinal matches, was anxious about yet another three setter in her title clash against Sowjanya.

After being 3-5 down in her first set, she went all-out to win the set 7-5.She then breezed through the second set with no hiccups and won the Championships.Pranjala won her fourth ITF title.

The 22-year-old was suffering from a shoulder injury that kept her out of action for nearly two years.She had won the ITF Lagos title last season three seasons prior.

The champion said, "I am grateful to be playing again and making a comeback with a win feels great." She also received USD 2352 as a winners check and 10 world ranking points, which will help her move up the rankings.

The finals started on a fiery note, with both players testing each others corners.Sowjanya was confident after her win over Rutuja Bhosale, the top seed, on Saturday.

She was aggressive, but it sometimes proved to be her downfall.Pranjala displayed an alarming calmness and was more concerned about her serving shoulder than her backhand.

Pranjala won her 3-2 victory after both players had broken their serve twice in the first four games.Her opponent won the next three matches to lead 5-3.Pranjala was able to survive the set with her great down-the-line backhand shots.Sowjanya made a few mistakes that helped her win four consecutive games and take the first set.Both players went for broke in the second set and held their serves until the fourth.Pranjala took control of the match and played some great tennis.
