Ira Khan, the daughter of Bollywood actors Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta, has openly shared her struggles with depression.
She discussed how her parents divorce and a family history of mental disorders have influenced her mental health.
Ira revealed that she began noticing changes when she started crying for long periods, sleeping excessively, and feeling a lack of desire to live. These signs prompted her decision to leave her college in the Netherlands and return to India.
Ira explained that her mother, Reena, pointed out her disinterest in life, leading her to sleep excessively as a way to escape the pain.Although her parents separation did not affect her significantly, Ira continued to feel sadness without understanding why.Reluctant to share her feelings with others due to their potential worry, she endured this period for about one-and-a-half years, during which she even stopped eating for four days.According to Ira, she experiences cyclic depression, with major crashes occurring every 8-10 months.
She acknowledged that her condition is influenced by a combination of genetic, psychological, and social factors. It took her some time to realize this, but she also recognized a history of mental health disorders within her family.
Additionally, Ira mentioned that her own unhealthy choices and lifestyle contributed to her descent into depression.Last year, in July, she experienced a significant low point when she stopped taking her medication and gained weight, which further impacted her mental state and deterred her from exercising.
Ira Khan is the second child of Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta. She has an older brother named Junaid Khan.
Aamir Khan and Reena divorced in 2002, after which Aamir married Kiran Rao, with whom he has a son named Azad. However, in 2021, Aamir and Kiran announced their separation.
Meanwhile, Ira has launched the Agastu Foundation, an organization aimed at providing support for mental health. Both Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta are part of the advisory board for this foundation.
Ira Khan actively addresses her mental health on social media platforms.Recently, she wrote a heartfelt note as a certified suicide prevention gatekeeper, offering support and understanding to those feeling suicidal.
