Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifiers canceled due to Covid fears; Bangladesh, Pakistan, and WI qualify

Dubai, Nov 27, : Bangladesh and Pakistan advanced to next year’s Women’s World Cup, New Zealand.The International Cricket Council (ICC), on Saturday, called off the qualifiers in Harare.

This was due to travel restrictions from several African countries including Zimbabwe, the host country, following the release of a new Covid-19 version in southern Africa.
The decision to cancel the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2021 was made during the preliminary league phase.

This was to determine the final three teams for ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022 to be played in New Zealand.Two additional teams were also selected for the next cycle.

The tournament playing conditions outlined the team rankings, which were used to determine the qualifiers.The ICC released a statement on Saturday stating that Bangladesh, Pakistan, West Indies and New Zealand will be advancing to the event.

Two of the three matches — Zimbabwe v Pakistan, USA v Thailand — were played as planned.However, the third fixture, between Sri Lanka and West Indies, was canceled due to Covid-19 testing by a member the Sri Lanka team support staff.

Chris Tetley, Head of Events at ICC, stated that while we are extremely disappointed to have to cancel the event, travel restrictions from a number African countries were imposed at such short notice that there was a serious chance that teams would not be able to return home.

“We have considered a variety of options to make the event possible, but it is not feasible.

We will fly the teams out to Zimbabwe as soon as we can.According to Tetley, Bangladesh, Pakistan and the West Indies will now be eligible for the ICC Women’s World Cup 202022 based on their rankings.Sri Lanka and Ireland will join them in the next cycle.

Australia, England and India have qualified for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022, which will be held in New Zealand between March 4 and April 3.

The number of teams participating in the third cycle ICC Women’s Championship (from 2020-2025) has increased from eight to ten.These teams will include Australia, England and India, South Africa and Sri Lanka.
