But, he will remain the UAE’s captain of One-day Internationals. The decision is made just three days prior to their game against Kuwait in Al-Amerat however, and two months prior to the start of their T20 World Cup campaign in Australia.

A statement from the ECB stated “The committee believesthat, following lengthy discussions, and following an in-depth review of the team’s recent 50-over performances, by providing the captain’s name with only a single-format-focus, it will create an effective succession plan for leadership and promotes a single determination to refine the tactical on-field elements of the game.

“UAE’s T20 game is in good standing and has exceptional depth.

This approach is the perfect time to evaluate what is the best option for this format going towards the (ICC T20) World Cup and beyond. The High Performance unit at UAE believes that this is a good chance to look at and consider all possibilities – player makeup and Captaincy – to improve the game,” said the statement.

The timing however is shocking, given that UAE is preparing for an important match in the near future.Raza was the captain of the team in perhaps the most difficult time of the history of cricket in his country, with a fixing scandal in 2019 destroying the team according to ICC.

Raza has a stellar performance record in his role in his role as T20I captain of the team with a record of winning 18 of 27 games as captain.Since his appointment as captain in 2019 Raza’s percentage of success in the format was a staggering 68 percent.Raza was recently interviewed by icc-cricket.com about his excitement of being the captain of the squad in Australia to play in the T20 World Cup in October.

“Your sole focus is on getting to the World Cup or getting to the World Cup, or getting to the international stage.I believe that as you grow as a player and as you grow as a person, you’ll want to think larger, think bigger.

“It’s not only about making it to the World Cup, it’s about getting to the Super 12s and causing some upsets here and creating a buzz about UAE cricket in the most positive way that everyone deserves and that this country is due.

“Hopefully that, when it gets to the end of October, it will not just be about my life story. The focus will be on the growth of cricket as well as where UAE cricket is at the moment and, hopefully, we get to the same stage,” Raza had said.

Rizwan takes over the role having played only seven T20Is, not scoring more than 100 runs with an average of just 16.66.

UAE will be featured on the first day of the 2022 T20 World Cup action, taking on the Netherlands in Geelong in Group A of the opening round.
