South Korea, China, and the US would be the leaders in the development and deployment 5G technology. Is India going to be able join the 5G global bandwagon?

Late last month, reports surfaced that the 5G spectrum could finally be available in 2022.According to reports, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has informed Department of Telecommunications that 5G pricing recommendations will be submitted by it in March. If all goes according to plan, 5G auctions could be held in July and August.

Telecommunication companies and private firms are conducting only 5G trials within the country, despite all the hype surrounding 5G.

Bharti Airtel, in collaboration with Nokia has conducted India’s first ever 5G test in 700 MHz Band.It was held in Kolkata.Airtel presented India’s first experience with 5G over an active 4G network earlier in the year.

Airtel also displayed India’s first 5G trial in rural areas and the first Cloud gaming experience using 5G.

Reliance Jio, another leader in 5G technology testing is also available. It has conducted successful trials with connected drones over its 5G network.

Mukesh Ambani (Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries Limited) believes that India should complete its migration from 2G, 4G, and 5G as soon as possible.

India should also prioritize the rollout and implementation of 5G.

Jio developed an entirely home-grown, comprehensive and cloud native 5G solution. It is digitally managed by Jio.

Ambani stated that Jio’s future-proof, converged architecture could allow for a seamless upgrade of Jio’s network from 4G to 5.

Nokia and Vodafone Idea also collaborated to test 5G services with E-band in places where fiber is difficult to install.

Vodafone Idea currently conducts 5G trials across India, using spectrum from the 3.3GHz to 3.6GHz band as well as the mmWave (24.25GHz-28.5GHz).Vodafone Idea’s 5G trials in Pune had seen a peak speed of 3.7 Gbps.

Reliance Jio and Vodafone were approved by the DoT for their 5G trial applications.

According to a recent Ericsson report, 5G will account for around 39% of Indian mobile subscriptions by 2027.

This is compared with approximately 500 million subscribers.

Viswanath RAMASWAMY, Vice President Technology, IBM Technology Sales in India/South Asia believes that 5G has enormous potential for advancements in streaming, communication, and manufacturing.

He said that despite the complex nature of today’s telecom networks, “it is evident that tools, systems, and methods must be coordinated for tomorrow’s network.”

Artificial Intelligence (AI), which is a form of Artificial Intelligence, has the potential to rapidly enable network changes that optimize network reliability and performance.Machine Learning can be applied. This will help “Communications service providers (CSPs), deliver on the promise 5G by offering faster customer experiences,” Ramaswamy said.

India is a “mobile-first” country.Cellular internet is central in every individual’s digital life as they connect, communicate, create, and consume content.

As smartphone users get older, their smartphones are used more to create 4K/8K videos and take high-resolution photos (108MP+), stream HD content, and conduct video conferencing calls.According to Neil Shah, Counterpoint’s Vice President of Research, 5G is the best technology for enabling these high-quality experiences.

Many smartphone manufacturers have begun testing 5G globally and in India.

In November 2021, OPPO announced it had successfully held its first VoNR call (Voice/Video on New Radio), from Hyderabad’s 5G laboratory.

These 5G VoNR phone calls were made with the Reno6 series smartphones and an End-to-End 5G Standalone network (SA), powered by Keysight solutions from the Hyderabad 5G Innovation Lab of OPPO.

OnePlus announced that it will invest almost $30 million in 5G research labs and development labs, to bring 5G technology to more people worldwide.

Capgemini, a technology services company has also increased its cooperation with Ericsson in order to speed up the deployment of 5G solutions through its 5G lab located in Mumbai.

Shah said that 5G has a greater impact than personal transformation.”Which includes enterprise and social change with higher capacity, lower latency and higher throughputs with use cases such as Private Networks or Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), Broadband, and bridging digital divide.”

Although 5G in India may not be affordable for all, it is possible to make it happen. However, India must start moving forward this year so it can catch up quickly with other countries on 5G.
