Visitor US lawmakers get together with Taiwan president despite China’s anger

Taipei 15 Aug : Five US lawmakers who were visiting Taiwan on Monday met with Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen and other lawmakers in an expression of solidarity with Taiwan amid the escalating tensions in the Taiwan Strait.
The US congressional delegation arrived Sunday for a two-day surprise visit.

The visit followed an earlier trip by the Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi according to the DPA news agency.

China has increased its pressure on Taiwan economically and militarily after Pelosi’s 19 hour visit to Taipei on August 2 and 3.

The delegation is comprised of Republicans as well as Democrats and consists of Senator Ed Markey and Representatives John Garamendi, Alan Lowenthal, Don Beyer and Aumua Amata Coleman Radewagen.

Local TV news reports show lawmakers stepping into the presidential offices to have a meeting with Tsai on Monday before going to the parliamentary building close by.

Legislator Lo Chih-cheng of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) informed reporters that the topics that were discussed during a meeting with US lawmakers could include future military cooperation between Taiwan and the United States.

Lo said that the US group’s visit to Taiwan at an extremely sensitive time and just days after China’s massive exercises close to Taiwan and demonstrates that Beijing can’t stop leading leaders from around the world from traveling to Taiwan.

“Their arrival also sends an important message to the world that American people stand with Taiwanese people,” Lo said.

The office of Tsai hasn’t disclosed any details regarding the meeting.

“I’m traveling to Taiwan with a bipartisan congressional delegation to reiterate US assistance to Taiwan and to promote peace and stability throughout the Taiwan Strait,” Markey tweeted on Twitter.

In Beijing the Chinese Defence Ministry spokesperson Wu Qian declared Monday that the visit of the US delegation to China undermined China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Taiwan has had its own Taiwanese government since 1949 however China regards the island as to be part of China’s territory.

Beijing does not want official contacts with other countries as well as Taipei.
