Washington, December 31, 2018 : .The US House Select Committee that is investigating the Jan 6 Capitol Riot has requested the Supreme Court reject the attempt by former President Donald Trump to prevent the release of records from his White House. In a court brief, lawyers for the Select Committee argued Thursday against Trump’s assertion of executive privilege over a trove records the panel believed was necessary to their investigation of the attack.
The Select Committee’s mission is urgent and of paramount importance: it investigates one of our darkest episodes, the attack on Congress and the US Capitol, as well as an unprecedented disruption of peaceful power transfer from one president to another. Next,” read the legal document.
It stated that the investigation was essential for the Select Committee to be able to suggest remedial steps to secure peaceful power transfer and to prevent any future attacks against our democratic institutions.”
After losing his case before lower Washington courts, Trump appealed last week to the Supreme Court, asking for an order to prevent the National Archives from disclosing the records worth over 700 pages to the Select Committee.
In his petition, the former President asked that the justices fully review the legal and constitutional issues surrounding Congress’ request to the records.He also requested that the transfer of the records be held up while this is being done.
Trump’s legal team argued that the Select Committee’s request to the records was not legitimately legislated.In a brief submitted to the Supreme Court Wednesday, it stated that the Select Committee “is seeking evidence that can provide the basis to a criminal referral towards the US Department of Justice.” It called the legislative effort an “inquisitorial Tribunal” with “purposes that are outside of any of Congress’s legislative powers.”
According to reports, the Select Committee plans to publish an interim Report containing preliminary findings in summer 2022.The final report will be published by the Select Committee in fall.
