The GPR informed Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin that the permanent stationing in South Korea of the helicopter squadron headquarters and artillery division headquarters was approved by the GPR, the department stated in a press release. It did not provide any further information.

It seems to refer to the 5-17th Heavy Armed Reconnaissance Squadron, (HARS), and the Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion 2nd Infantry Division Artillery, (HBB, DIVATY).

The Eighth US Army, which is based in South Korea announced the decision in September.

The GPR is coming at a time when Washington is trying to strengthen cooperation with friendly countries against an increasingly assertive China, and a nuclear-ambitious North Korea.

The Pentagon stated that the review in the Indo-Pacific directs additional cooperation to allies and partners to advance initiatives that contribute regional stability and deter Chinese military aggression from North Korea.”

According to the Pentagon, the GPR evaluated the US military’s defense posture in major regions outside the US and made near-term adjustments to it and provided analysis on longer-term strategic issues.

The US seems to be focusing on military reinforcements in Guam and Australia, which is a key ally of the US.The US recently strengthened security cooperation with Australia through a nuclear-powered submarine agreement that also includes Britain.

The Pentagon stated that these (defence-related) initiatives include gaining greater regional access for military partner activities; enhancing infrastructure on Australia and the Pacific Islands; as well as planning rotational aircraft deployments to Australia, as announced in September.

Although the Pentagon did not mention any major reorganization of American forces in South Korea or the adjacent region, speculation persists that the US might seek adjustments to the US Forces Korea’s (USFK), in order to counter security threats from China.

Washington and Seoul have been discussing the future role of USFK.The US wants to use the 28,500-strong contingent for regional defense roles, while the South hopes that the USFK will be primarily focused on countering North Korean threats.

This issue has taken on greater geopolitical significance as the US has been trying to mobilize its military resources to the Indo-Pacific to combat China’s assertiveness amid a growing great-power rivalry on security and technology.

The GPR was ordered by Joe Biden, the US President.

According to the department, Secretary Austin led the review as a whole-of government effort and in coordination and cooperation with allies.
