US uses sub-Sahara strategies to combat Russian, Chinese influence

Washington 9th, August : The US is adopting a brand new strategy to strengthen its cooperation with nations in sub-Saharan Africa , and to limit the influence of China and Russia in the region The White House said in a statement.
“This strategy redefines the importance of the region to US security concerns,” dpa news agency reported the statement that was released on Monday .

Washington plans to take more steps to encourage society-wide openness in order to combat “harmful activities of Russia, the People’s Republic of China, Russia and other foreign actors” the statement added.

The US will assist in helping Africa to achieve “democratic and security dividends” in the statement it added.

Washington will cooperate with allies and regional partners “to stop the recent wave of militarism and authoritarianism”.

Another goal is to fight the coronavirus epidemic and its economic and social effects.

“These problems have been exacerbated by supply chain issues as well as food insecurity resulting from Russia’s conflict of aggression in Ukraine.”

This new plan also calls for a greater US support for the impacts of climate change on sub-Saharan Africa.

“Although this region has very minimal emissions per person, it is likely to be afflicted by the brunt of the worst impacts of the climate crisis,” the report said.

Washington will “use our influence in development assistance, influence, and financial resources to assist African partners adjust and improve their resilience to climate-related impacts and encourage mitigation strategies to ensure a low-carbon and sustainable future”.

The news is happening just as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken began a visit to the region that began with South Africa on Sunday.

In the meantime Biden is president.

Biden has revealed plans to invite African heads of government and state to an annual summit in Washington between the 13th and 15th of December.
