Washington 7 Aug, Washington : The US has accused Beijing of “provocative” and “irresponsible” actions following Taiwan claimed that China had practiced an attack against the island. Taiwan has said it has responded to Chinese drills, which are in the fourth day by deploying ships and aircraft on Sunday according to the BBC reported.
The increased tensions come after an excursion to Taiwan by an US delegation headed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
China considers the visit to be an attempt to undermine the claims of sovereignity over Taiwan China, which views Taiwan as a distinct nation.
Taiwan’s defence ministry announced Chinese aircraft and ships were carrying out mission in the Taiwan Strait during this weekend with several crossing the median line which is an unofficial buffer that separates the two sides as the BBC reported.
In a press conference in Taipei the premier Su Tseng-chang blasted China of “arrogantly” employing the exercises to undermine regional stability.
He also demanded caution from the Chinese side.
Beijing has not made any comments on the latest exercise but its four-day series of military exercises in the air and in the in the waters around Taiwan are expected to conclude on Sunday.
Washington has been accused by China of increasing tensions.
“These actions are an important step in China’s attempts to challenge the status situation.
They are provocative and irresponsible and pose the possibility of mistakes,” a White House spokesperson said.
“They are also in conflict with our long-standing aim of keeping peace and security across the Taiwan Strait, which is what the world is expecting.”
China said that Pelosi’s visit “seriously could have a negative impact on” peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
