UP to honor CWG sportspersons CWG

Lucknow 10 August : The Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced that the Uttar Pradesh government will honour eight sportspeople that have done the state and nation proud by winning medals during the Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Birmingham.
The chief minister announced on Wednesday that, under the new policy on sports the government has recently declared that athletes who have won medals at international events will be treated with respect and place.’

“The government will recognize the athletes of the state that took part in the CWG.According to the policy on sports the government will provide jobs and benefits to the athletes who earned medals,” he tweeted.

Under the new rules the new policy, a cash prize of one crore rupees would be awarded to the gold medalist and Rs 75 lakh to the silver medallist, and 50 lakh to the bronze medalist.

Additional Chief Secretary Navneet Sehgal has said that all medallists will also be awarded the rank of an officer who is gazetted.

The felicitation ceremony is expected to take place in the beginning week of September, Sehgal added.

The people who hail from Uttar Pradesh who won medals in the Commonwealth Games are Priyanka Goswami who took home a silver medal in 10 km walk.

Deepti Sharma of Meerut and Meghna Singh of Bijnor and Lalit Upadhyay of Varanasi who took home silver medals in women’s hockey and cricket, respectively.

In the same way, Vijay Kumar Yadav of Varanasi, Divya Kakran of Muzaffarnagar, Annu Rani of Meerut and Vandana Kataria have won bronze medals for the nation in wrestling, judo javelin throw and women’s soccer and women’s hockey, respectively.

Alongside eight medallists and five other athletes are from Uttar Pradesh will get Rs 5 lakh each from the government in exchange for participating in the Commonwealth Games, Sehgal said.

The five sportspersons include Meerut’s Seema Poonia (discus throw) Varanasi’s weightlifters Poonam Yadav and Poornima Yodav Jaunpur’s Rohit Yadav (javelin throw) and Sambhal’s Sarita Yadav (hammer throw).

The 2022 Commonwealth Games were held in Birmingham, England from July 28 until August 8.
