UNSC extends the mandate of Counter-Terrorism Executive Directorate

United Nations, December 31 : .The UN Security Council unanimously approved Resolution 2617.

This renews the mandate for the Counter-Terrorism Executive Directorate, (CTED), for an additional four years until December 31, 2025.
CTED will operate as a special mission political under the guidance of Counter-Terrorism Committee.

An interim review will take place by December 31st 2023.

CTED, a UN Secretariat Body that supports the CTC.

To support the work of CTC, Resolution 1535 established it.

This directorate was also involved in the assessment of the implementation of Resolutions 1373, which created the CTC.It decided that all countries will criminalize the financing of terrorist activities.Resolution 1624 called for member states to criminalize the encouragement to terrorist acts.

CTED is grateful for its cooperation with UN Global Counterterrorism Compact Entities and other UN-related UN bodies and regional organizations.CTED should continue inviting representatives of these organisations to take part in CTED’s assessment work so they can continue to make recommendations that will help build capacity within member states in the most urgent areas.

CTED is encouraged to evaluate, as necessary, the efforts of member countries to combat all forms terrorist and violent extremism.This includes those based on xenophobia and other forms intolerance or the name religion or belief.
