UN will mark 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence

New Delhi, November 18th : .Under the global theme of “Orange the World”: Stop Violence against Women Today! The 16-day campaign against gender-based violence will be marked by the United Nations from November 25 through December 10.
Emerging data shows that violence against girls and women, especially domestic violence has increased since the outbreak of Covid-19.The world is not prepared to deal with its rapid increase.

The UN Women has released a new report on Covid-19 based on data collected from 13 countries.It shows how Covid-19 has had a significant impact on women’s sense of security, at home as well as in public spaces, and that it is having a negative effect on their mental health and wellbeing.

The current context of violence, humanitarian crises, and growing climate-related catastrophes has exacerbated violence against women.This alarming trend calls for urgent action to end this terrible trend.

There is evidence to suggest that violence against girls and women can be stopped with an integrated approach.This includes addressing the root causes and transforming harmful social norms.Providing services for survivors, and ending impunity.

Generation Equality Forum created unprecedented momentum for and committed to preventing and eliminating violence against girls and women.

We all can play a part in creating a better future without violence.

Official UN commemoration events will be held on November 24, from 10 to 11.30 AM.ET.

Participants include UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres; UN Women Executive Director Sima Bais; UN Women Goodwill Ambassador Cindy Bishop; and UN Special Rapporteur for Violence against Women, Its Causes and Effects, Reem Alsalem.

Participants include leaders and decision makers from Action Coalition on Gender Based Violence, as well representatives of NGO Women for Afghan Women (Afghan), MOFEDGA, Haiti and Women for Afghan Women (Afghan).

Shantel Marekera, a Generation Equality Youth Taskforce member, will host the event.The performance lineup includes MC Soffia (Brazil) and “Pretty Loud”, a Roma girl band from Serbia.
