Beirut 12 August : United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has called on Lebanon as well as Israel to avoid any move that could put the cessation of hostilities along the border in danger according to the UNIFIL statement. “Blue Line stability shouldn’t be taken for as a given.
The use of belligerent language increases tension and increases the sense of anxiety in the local population,” declared UNIFIL Chief Aroldo Lazaro Saenz , on Thursday.
The Blue Line is a demarcation line that divides Lebanon and Israel as well as Lebanon and the Golan Heights, which was published by the United Nations in 2000, Xinhua news agency reported.
His remarks were made during a three-way gathering with high-ranking officers from the Lebanese Armed Forces and the Israel Defence Forces at Lebanon’s southern city of Ras Al Naqoura to discuss recent incidents on the Blue Line, continued air violations and other issues and developments.
The UNIFIL Chief of Staff noted that both parties’ engagements, as a result of UNIFIL’s established coordination and liaison mechanism, have helped in stopping any further escalation along Blue Line.
“These instruments have once more demonstrated their worth.”
Since the conclusion of the war of 2006 in south Lebanon periodic tripartite meetings are being held as a crucial peace-building and conflict-management mechanism.
