UN expresses its concern over 26 cases of cholera in Syria

Damascus on the 14th of September : The total of 26 cases of cholera have been identified in Syria and an UN official has expressed “serious concern over the spread of the disease”.
The Syrian Health Ministry said in an announcement on Tuesday that two persons died of the cholera virus in Aleppo in the north.

of Aleppo and twenty cases were identified in Aleppo four in the coastal city of Latakia and two in the capital city of Damascus.

It emphasized that the necessary steps are being taken to stop the spread of the disease.

Hospitals are being provided with an extra supply of medications in the event of any rise of those with confirmed cases.Xinhua news agency reported.

The status of the disease as well as the numbers of confirmed cases has been updated daily the Ministry said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights stated that cholera also taken hold in the western region of Deir al-Zour, which is governed by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

It also stated that six individuals died due to cholera in the areas controlled by Kurds in the northeastern region of Syria in the last week.

In the northern part of Raqqa city, which is also managed by the SDF the SDF, cases of cholera are increasing slowly with 15 confirmed cases in the city according to the Observatory.

The watchdog group in the UK cited sources who speculated that the reason for the outbreak is contaminated water.

On his part, Imran Riza, the UN resident and humanitarian coordinator in Syria has expressed, in an announcement on Monday, his deep concern about the issue he called the “ongoing cholera epidemic in Syria”.

The statement stated that from August 25 until September 10, surveillance data revealed that there were a total of 936 severe cases of acute watery diarrhoea were identified in Syria including at least eight deaths.

It was found that, Based on a quick analysis the cause of disease is thought to be related to people drinking unclean waters from the Euphrates river and using the contaminated water to irrigate crops which results in contamination of food.

It was noted that the emergence of the cholera epidemic is a sign of an acute water shortage of water in Syria.

It further stated that UN organizations and non-governmental organizations are working closely with health officials to ensure a prompt and efficient response.
