UN, Ethiopia launch $73 million appeal to help more than 750,000 refugees

Addis Ababa, Aug 10 : The UN World Food Programme (WFP) as well as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Ethiopian Government Refugees and Returnees Service (RRS) have launched a joint appeal of $73 million to provide food rations for over 750,000 refugees in the eastern region of the African country.
In a joint press release the three organizations Tuesday said that the funds are vital to cover the food requirements of refugees over the next six months, Xinhua news agency reported.

“WFP will run out of food aid for refugees by the end of October, putting vulnerable families who depend to food aid in danger of undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies susceptibility to illness and increased risk of protection,” the statement added.

“Due to the ongoing funding shortages, WFP has already been forced to cut off rations to 750,000 registered refugees who live in 5 sites and 22 camps in communities that host them in Ethiopia’s Afar, Amhara, Benishangul-Gumuz, Gambella, Somali and Tigray regions,” the statement further stated.

Insecurity in food for refugees in Ethiopia has increased due to the impact of the cuts, and is further aggravated by the current global restrictions to food supply, conflict and the rising cost of energy and food and the repercussions of Covid-19.

The three organizations also demanded that all partners intensify efforts to meet the long-term and medium-term food requirements of refugees in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia is the third largest country hosting refugees in Africa, with 870,507 asylum seekers and refugees in the country as of June 20, 2022 UNHCR statistics show. The majority of refugees come from South Sudan, Sudan, Somalia and Eritrea.
