UN chief responds to unrest in Solomon Islands

United Nations, Nov 27, : UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has been following violent protests in Honiara, Solomon Islands capital, with concern and called to end violence and protect hard-earned peacebuilding gains.Farhan Haq, his deputy spokesperson, stated that Guterres had asked for an end of the violence.
According to Xinhua news agency, the secretary-general urged dialogue and peaceful ways to resolve differences in the country.

On Friday, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported that violence has escalated in Honiara and that several roads have been blocked.

Some buildings were set on fire and some stores looted.

It stated that all UN staff were found safe and sound, and that no damage to UN assets had been reported.

Honiara has a need for assistance for people who have been forced to flee their homes.According to the OCHA, the World Health Organisation works closely with the Solomon Islands Ministry of Health in order to provide any support required.
