United Nations, New York : , Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary General has called for the protection of human life in a world where traffic accidents claim 24 lives every second. Road traffic collisions claim lives every 24 seconds.In a statement for the day, the UN’s top official stated that the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims “is a time for reflection on the tragic deaths of millions of persons.”
According to Xinhua, the theme for this year is to reduce traffic speeds in order prevent serious injury and death — especially among young people and those at the beginning of their adult life, as well as pedestrians, and other road users who are vulnerable such children and elderly, and others with disabilities.
Guterres said, “I call on every nation, citizen, and company to help make roads safer,” Guterres continued.
“I encourage all members states to adhere to United Nations Road Safety Conventions, and to implement whole-of society action plans — I also urge all donors to increase much-needed technical and financial contributions via the United Nations Road Safety Fund.”
The Secretary General stated, “As we prepare for next year’s UN General Assembly high-level meeting to improve road safety,”
He said, “Today, and every day let us make roads safer for all, everywhere.”
As a way to recognize victims of traffic accidents and their families, the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims is observed every November on the third Sunday of November.RoadPeace in the UK was the first to start this memorial.It was then adopted by UN General Assembly 2005.
