London 15th August : London, Aug 15 : UK is the first country to approve a fresh Covid jab that specifically targets the Omicron variant, Daily Mirror reported. The “next generation” coronavirus booster jab could only require administration every year, and is cleared for use in adults.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has approved Moderna’s bivalent vaccinethat will target the first Covid strain as well as the Omicron variant, Daily Mirror reported.
It is known as mRNA-1273.214 This dose is an up-to-date version of the Moderna vaccine, which is currently in use for the first and second doses as well as booster doses.It is the first dose to be approved in the UK that targets two types of the virus.
Moderna’s chief medical official, Dr.Paul Burton, previously said that the new vaccine could increase a person’s antibody levels to such a high level that it could be required every year, Daily Mirror reported.
Stephane Bancel, chief executive officer at Moderna explained it as an “next generation Covid vaccine” that is expected to play an “important role in protecting people in the UK from Covid-19” during winter.
Bancel declared: “We are delighted with the MHRA’s authorization of Spikevax Bivalent Original/Omicron, our new generation Covid-19 vaccine.
“This is the first time that we have been granted the approval of an Omicron bivalent vaccination which further demonstrates the commitment and commitment of the UK public health authorities in helping to stop the covid-19 pandemic”.
Bancel said that jabs have “consistently demonstrated superior strength of immunity” over other options in clinical studies.
The MHRA confirmed that the effects of the vaccine are similar to those observed in the initial Moderna booster dose, and were generally mild.
