Copenhagen, Nov 28, : According to a press release by the Ministry of Health, two suspected cases of Omicron, a new corona variant, were found in South African travellers who entered Denmark from South Africa. “The authorities have a reasonable suspicion we have the first two cases Omicron in Denmark,” stated Magnus Heunicke, Health Minister, in a press release on Saturday.
Heunicke said that the two infected people were in South Africa.They are now isolated and authorities are trying to track down the third link.
The Danish Agency for Patient Safety called for passengers on Saturday evening from two flights between Amsterdam, Netherlands and Copenhagen, Denmark.They were asked to quarantine and be tested.
According to Xinhua news agency, the final confirmation of the tests results for the suspected cases will be available within a few days.
The Health Ministry stated that it is especially concerned about the new variant due to its “many more mutations of the spike protein than usual” and the “uncertainty” over how contagious it might be and how effective current vaccines against it.
The Omicron variant (B.1.1.529), which is a new coronavirus variant, was first reported in Botswana in November 2021.It also appeared in South Africa on November 14, 2019.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Union (EU), Commission, issued a statement Friday urging EU member states to suspend flights to southern African countries where this new variant was first detected.
The Statens Serum Institut has registered 3,744 new Covid-19 cases and 13 deaths in the last 24 hours.This brings the national total to 474.637 cases and 2,863 death.
Covid-19, a third worrying epidemic that has struck Denmark, has been reclassified as a socially critical disease.It was first reported on November 11.Authorities reintroduced corona passports in many areas, including restaurants, cafes and hospitals, as well as zoos.
